STORY – The Storm That Switched Us Back On

When the power went out across the entire neighborhood, Liam wasn’t surprised—storms often knocked out the lines where he lived. What did surprise him was how quiet everything suddenly became. No humming appliances, no buzzing streetlights, no distant cars. Just the rain tapping against the windows. With nothing electronic working, Liam lit a candle and sat by the window, watching the dark houses around him. It felt strange, almost like time had slowed down.

As he listened, he realized he could hear things he normally never noticed: the soft drip of water from the roof, the rustle of branches in the wind, even the rhythmic breathing of his dog asleep on the floor. It wasn’t scary—it was peaceful. Liam found himself relaxing, as if the whole world had taken a deep breath and let it out slowly. He decided to explore the house, seeing it in a way he never had before, guided only by the dim flicker of the candle.

Eventually, Liam stepped outside onto the porch. The storm had passed, leaving the air cool and fresh. All around him, neighbors were stepping outside too, each carrying a candle or lantern. They smiled at one another, sharing the strange, quiet moment. Without phones or TVs or noise, people actually talked. Liam realized something he had never thought about: sometimes having no electricity doesn’t take something away. Sometimes, it gives something back.
